Manoli is a small village, spread in about 1600 acres, located about 9 kms from Rai in Sonepat district in Haryana. This village has over the years taken long strides in agriculture. It grows broccoli, strawberries, mushrooms, and vegetables like spinach, tomato, cucumber, brinjal which caters to the nearby Delhi market. It has a big dairy, with some 300 cows, and is also a very smart user of poly house cultivation. Just three months back the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder ...Singh Hooda had given a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh to this village in view of its achievements on the farm front.
This village has now been opened up for sand mining.
Yesterday, I was invited to address a Kisan Panchayat at Manoli. Over a thousand farmers from Manoli and the three adjoining villages -- Khurampur, Pabasaran and Bharabakipur had assembled to protest against the the wanton destruction of these villages. I don't understand the logic behind turning a prosperous village into a graveyard in the name of 'development'. A total of 3,200 acres in the four villages have been notified for sand mining. And like everywhere else, the villagers or the panchayats have not been consulted.
