L'EDIT DE NANTES.

  • In France Napoleon went to the extent of separating the state from the church physically by taking back lands of church and stopping government payment of salaries for church workers. They edicted laws (l'édit de NANTES) to make it effective. This was like lightening with thunder FALLING on the dome of their churches. Especially the founding father of education in France made the school a place of social equality by making compulsory the absence of external religious signs in any form by students. They called it "laicité" that is an area of religious neutrality. This laicité was WRONGLY translated in to secularism. Their suffering at the hands of those fanatics made them to act this way, we need not import all that comes out of the west.
