The overall progress of a nation can be gauged by looking at the proportion of its efforts that go toward the fulfillment of dharma and mokśa puruśarthas, as opposed to only artha and kāma.

Society, especially as it stands today, has primarily become kāma pradhāna, with lesser value given to the higher ideals of dharma.
