INDIAN defence expenditure

According to a report, India’s imports of major weapons went up by more than 100 per cent since 2004, of which about 75 per cent were from Russia. America became the top exporter to India in 2013 as measured by SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), mainly due to purchase of Boeing’s military C-17 heavy transport aircraft and P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine planes. Clearly the defence expenditure, which has been one of the biggest part of India’s budgetary expenses, has cost the country a huge chunk of its foreign exchange
